Rockstar’s latest smash Red Dead Redemption is taking the world by storm at the moment. It’s mix of all action Call of Duty style combat, cheery 1911 racism and vast sand filled plains is enough to lead the worlds Red Necks and computer geeks to think they’ve died and gone to heaven.

The game is based around the rugged looking John Marston, a guy who looks like the offer of a bath and a shave would be a deepest insult. In a typical American cooked up plot, Marston sets out to bring justice to a selection of his former gang members. Along the way is a beautiful blonde in distress and a selection of outlaws, drunks and general weirdo’s who all try to help and hinder your progress.

While Rockstar will tell you Red Dead is a game worthy enough to stand on it’s own two legs, it is Grand Theft Auto in 1911. No it’s not, I hear you say? we’ll you’re wrong. Okay? Good. Anyway, to cut a very long story short, Marston finally gets his men, but is shot when he tries to save his family who then want revenge.

The selection of weapons are all a delight to use. Whether your cutting up your own horse to sell for ammo, or throwing petrol bombs at a bunch of inbreds who play poker with all the subtlety of a bunch of old ladies who play bingo, there really is something to please. My personal favourites are the throwing knifes, perfect for close range undetected kills. Because it’s 1911, you could have quite easily changed sex by the time your guns re-load, and the sub-machine based weapons are treated like witch-craft by shop keepers alike.

Overall, Red Dead is a stunning game. Predictable? yes. Interesting? yes. Playable? yes. If you can get over the soul destroying and never ending time spent riding between missions, the sheer serial killer like anger you experience when you lose a duel and the constant referring to people as ‘boy’, ‘partner’ and ‘sir’, this is a thoroughly enjoyable way to waste your life.
